1  General Topics / News & Commentary / Re: The Next Step for Private Orbital Transport on: December 04, 2007, 02:48:29 PM
Well--to be fair--the DASH-80/KC-135 tanker (gov't/military money) is what gave us air travel today. Not Lindy.

If a simple (cough) Buran type shuttle were filled with payling passengers en masse--that is a different matter.

interesting idea. Hydrogen got a bum wrap.
3  Research / Alternate SE System Designs / Re: Heavy Lift by Tethered Asteroid Fly-by (HLTAF) on: November 30, 2007, 11:02:54 AM
This heavy lift concept might be a candidate for an asteroid tether catch:

http://www.astronautix.com/craft/bonaucer.htm

I wonder if a magrail can work while submerged. We have seen cryogenics and the disk shaped pills of superconducting material levitate--so a cold LH2/LOX filled disk should be no different. Disks do not need landing gear per se for water recovery--as explained here

http://www.astronautix.com/craftfam/lenicles.htm

An asteroid could help in lifting such a saucer shaped hab-ship from the surface...

An interesting concept.

I think having the station at ) lat ) long is a good one. Little wave action from the north.
6  Achieving the Space Elevator / Science & Technology / Re: New solution: flywheel energy storage on: November 09, 2007, 02:15:32 PM
On the subject of flywheels---a spinning station consisting of a nuclear power station might be able to spin up disks that are located in Mars ships. No on board reactor, no solar panels of any real size. The spinning disk generated a field, and perhaps art g at certain locations. As electrical power is generated--the disk slows. to a stop at the target where more modest power can be had.

9  General Topics / The Social Lounge / Re: Ideas for lunar base power requirements on: November 09, 2007, 01:57:53 PM
I have wondered about SPS systems orbiting the sun itself, then beaming back power to rectennas in Earth orbit--and then to ground.

I wonder about loops of coils orbing the sun--perhaps surrounding it with the sun as a big motor...
10  Groups / Elevator 2010 & Spaceward Foundation / Re: The European branch of the Sapceward foundation is open on: November 09, 2007, 01:54:34 PM
Nice link.
11  Research / Alternate SE System Designs / Re: Venus Space Elevator - And They Said It Couldn't Be Done on: November 09, 2007, 01:51:16 PM
A wide disk at the terminus would block sunlight, and reduce heating. This might also be a way of removing CO2 from Venus--so it can be dumped on Mars at a later date.
12  Research / Alternate SE System Designs / Re: Heavy Lift by Tethered Asteroid Fly-by (HLTAF) on: November 09, 2007, 01:40:23 PM
I wonder how this can be configured so as to reduce strain further...
13  Research / The Ribbon / Re: Possible break thru for making CNT into a 100 kilometer ribbon of great strength on: November 09, 2007, 01:37:08 PM
Sounds promising...
