Nanotubes can now be made from silicon.  These may be useful for building a lunar space elevator since the Moon has no carbon but does have lots of silicon.

I think the moon soil is several parts per million in free carbon and carbon compounds such as silicon carbide and iron carbide. It may be as much as 25% silicon so it may be much less costly to produce extremely pure silicon than extremely pure carbon.   Neil
