Hi!

Just heard about this space elevator thingy i few days ago. One of the first things that crossed my mind was, not so much the strength of the nanotube (it's "just" a technical issue), but the torque (moment) at the base: It should be in the order of millions of Newton meter.

I haven't seen anyone address this, so either it's a non-issue (shows how much I know) or so simple it's completely overlooked. Would be nice to hear from you LiftPort guys why 10^6 Nm or more isn't a problem.

Thanks!

Why should there be any torque at the Earth's surface the cable is stationary?

Well, as the car moves up or down the bean stalk, a force is exterted on the nanotube perpendicular to it...

Hi Paul, wecome to liftport. The torque in your last post has been discussed. The weight of the climber will stretch the ribbon above the climber. The acceleration of the climber will produce additional stretch. The stretch transient will rush ahead of the climber up the ribbon at perhaps 10,000 kilometers per hour. The ribbon will drift to the East due to corriellus effect draging the anchor ship in that direction unless modest ship power is used to maintain position. The Earth's rotation is slowed minutely as a the space elevator is used, unless there are pay loads moving down the ribbon as well as up. Our year will be a few nanoseconds longer as a result of using space elevators mostly for up cargos.   Neil
