It may be cheaper to launch from the moon but building a factory on the moon will be very, very expensive.  Carbon is also hard to find on the moon.

http://www.thespacereview.com/article/916/1

This article is space review argues that a large mass at/or near GEO is much cheaper than having to produce the extra cable. The article assumes the cable will be  a Chemical vapor deposition  diamond thread. The article is worth reading although I still reckon the Bolo is the only way to go.

I am not quite certain what height he is advocating for the diamond Space Elevator.
6% of g = 0.06g = 0.5886 m/s/s

Earth gravity drops to 0.06g at 19,660 km but that is below GEO.
The Centripetal force is equal to 0.06g at 104,850 km.
The net acceleration becomes 0.06g at 110,350 km.

This is longer than the planned Space Elevator cable.  Or is the counter weight at 110,000 km without the big and very expensive bump in the middle.

well, starting on the moon could be an idea, assuming that the materials nesesary for the construction would be redily available.  But at that point, one would need a moon "base" of operations.  And getting that to the moon in the first place could be an issue.  after the space elevator is completed, perhaps a second facility could be set up to build and mass produce the CNT, etc, or materials required.

But... this may be a suggestion for the ribbon...  Has anyone ever tried to "construct" or assemble a cnt in zero gravity??? orbit.... would this even be possible given the equipment required... would the flaws become more numerous, or would they become scarce...Huh  Something to look into for when the first elevator is fully functional.

If we had an extensive manufacturing infrastructure on the moon, it would be a better place to supply the ribbon and deployment craft. In theory, we can do manucturing on the moon with robots and waldos, but as far as I know we have not yet done so.  Neil
