Thank you to all who submitted entries for the LiftPort T-Shirt Poetry Contest from the Contests Newsletter . This contest was a lot of fun and I enjoyed receiving your entries. Here are the results...

The winner of the LiftPort T-Shirt (available from our store), based solely on random drawing from the entries received is:

Mark Benvenuto

Congratulations Mark, and thanks to everyone for your participation, At least I had a lot of fun reading these. I also learned a little something about what we're doing here. Although we're busy working in the nano fields, working on turning our balloon testing rig into a commercial product, and especially working on the social and political aspects necessary to see this project to completion, we're not doing a good enough job communicating that. That helps me know what direction I need to focus. Thank you.

Here are the poems:

Now I want to go
In a Space Elevator
Away to the Stars

    - David Filmer
ribbon of diamonds
slips through the clouds and escapes
blue marble below
    - Lee Sudduth
A silvery thread
Rising up above the Earth
Destiny awaits
    - Greg

The sky leaks away
unmasking countless lamps
beyond heaven's ladder

    - Bruce Cordell

Space Elevator
Rising high above our Dreams
A Wonderful World

    - James Madara

the clouds fall beneath
my feet, the sky melts away
i am superman

    - Justin

The sky is falling
by Peter Garceau
Can you imagine,
A Lifter Swiftly climbing?
Space draws ever closer

Soaring high above
like a child attached to its mother
held to us by cord

    - Jinzo

Fish climbs waterfall
Modern star rises to sky
Returns with bounty

    - Brian Ballsun-Stanton

I dreamed of space
an upward fall from orbit
on gossamer thread.

    - deadgenome

Imagination
of potential unrealized
elevates our souls.

    - Adam Smith

Tethered to our earth
A ribbon to span the sky
Founders of a way

    - Joshua Lopez

Freedom to exist
When and where we please to be
Our dreams set us free

    - Joe Mitchell

To the stars we must
Go. Fuel is costly, so use
the elevator.

    - Michael Murray

is this lift broken?
everything is getting small
i wanted floor five

    - Sam

ride the nanotube
beanstalk out of earth's deep well:
touch both moon and stars

    - Marcia Barrett Nice

A visionary
Climber of the blue expanse
A ride beyond the sky

    - Joshua Lopez

A lift to space made
of tiny carbon tubes. We
surely must be mad.

    - Michael Murray

smell of salt water,

still seas and bright summer sky:

space elevator

    - Marcia Barrett Nice

To get into space
The carbon nanotube way
Knit them together

    - David Filmer

 And now for the Limericks:

There once was a group from Seattle
Who felt in their bones a rattle
To get off the planet
They really must jam it
And not just the old fannish prattle.

    - Marcia Barrrett Nice

When we thought we would not reach the top,
And our progress as people would stop,
Just a stone on a rope
Gave a whole planet hope:
"Hey, it's Us! The new kids on the block!"
    - Kelley Johnston

A transport to inner space

What a most desired place

Can’t you just see their face

When the lift goes there and back

A return from a sky so black

What a place, what a record case

    - Joshua Lopez

There was a man from Perth
Who had been gazing the stars since birth
He said See you Later
Took the space elevator
And never came back to earth

    - Jonas Soderstrom

A member of the human race,
Who had travelled all over the place,
Was now quite bored, with all currently explored,
So went up in a lift into space.

    - deadgenome

CNTs give us all a fine chance,
To join in the great Cosmic Dance,
'Tween the Moon and the stars
    In railway cars,
Giving space a new kind of romance.

There once was Liftport, the Group
with cables so high you'll just whoop
with cars hooked in sockets
there's no need for rockets
but, gads, don't look down or you'll poop.

    - Mark Benvenuto

There was a young lady named Pope
Who climbed up into space on a rope.
That's not the best thing to do,
Said a LiftPort Guru.
Our Lift will be quicker, we hope!
    - David Filmer

If you want to get into space,
Without Kerosene/Oxygen waste,
    The best way to go
    Is Electrically, so,
Get yourself down to our place!

Birth of the Space Elevator

There once was a man named Mike Laine

Who some people thought was insane.

But he showed them the light

Of a way to new flight

Thus the space elevator's explained.

    - Donna Dunbar

And as poet's are indeed free thinkers, here's two more entries:

Liftport has the idea, to the sky they will go

Money, the big issue, soon will flow

And a cable will be strung from the Earth with care

In hopes big business will pay the fare

And other ideas, I hope, are not lost

Like mine, to use this as an exhaust

Put a big pipe up over the pole

From which bad gases will start to roll

Worth a fortune you say? O yes this is true

The savior of the Earth, Red, White and Blue

The temperature will cool, a few degree

As others pay fortunes on bended knee

And with the climate we can make sport

All from the doings of Liftport

    - Jeff Lane

Lifter, Lifter, In The Sky

Lifter, lifter, in the sky
How is it you climb so high
Up above the clouds you go
Power beamed up from below
Lifter, lifter, in the sky
How is it you climb so high

Climbing slowly to the stars
Bringing Earthlings from afar
Holding goodies big and small
Opening space for us all
Lifter, lifter, in the sky
How is it you climb so high

Clinging tightly to the ribbon
Made of nanotubes of carbon
On your top is a counterweight
Down below is the LiftPort gate
Lifter, lifter, in the sky
How is it you climb so high

    - Darnell Clayton

Thanks again to everyone who participated.
