My first radio interview…
I’ve never been much of a public speaker in my life, preferring direct communication as much as possible. I’m not afraid to speak to crowds, in fact I’ve done that fairly frequently in the last couple of years now and have had quite a bit of positive feedback, but before I joined LiftPort, I just never had the any reason to do public speaking. Yesterday, however, I was invited to be interviewed by the top rated morning show in Seattle.
My wife, Tina, and I signed up to visit the studio as “backstage pass” guests (Tina’s birthday wish). We went in Tuesday and got to enjoy watching the inner-workings of a successful radio broadcast. At the end of the show, the host asked us both what we do for a living. When I told him, he was astonished and asked me back for an interview. The producer scheduled a telephone interview and I finally had the opportunity to experience a mild panic attack. I felt ill. I’ve never had one of these before. I don’t know why, but the idea of speaking to hundreds of thousands of people over a telephone was something that really made me nervous.
Yesterday morning, I drove down to the station and waited in the lobby, hoping they would just let me in the studio to do the interview there. Luckily they were happy to let me in and the panic was gone. Michael Laine has done countless radio, newspaper, magazine and television interviews and was reflecting nostalgically on that sense of panic that I had. I really enjoyed the experience and would like to thank the Bob River’s Show for having me. My interview can be found here (the audio clip is labeled “An Elevator to Space? Really?”).

We need to mp3-ify that audio clip and repost. Some of us can’t stream audio – we get yelped at by the network team if we do.
